Trampoline size guide for Irish gardens

The size of trampoline you can have is set by two numbers from BERG's manual and one measurement of your own. This guide gives the two numbers, shows how to take the measurement, and then lists every size in our catalogue with the ground each one needs and what it costs.

It is written for gardens anywhere in Ireland, with a section for County Mayo, where we deliver by courier through East West Express of Charlestown, Co. Mayo. Sizes and prices are read from our price list. The clearances are BERG's. The footprint sums are ours.

    1. BERG's clearance: 2 m at the sides, 7 m overhead

BERG asks for 2 m of clear space at the sides of a trampoline and 7 m clear above it. Clear means free of fences, walls, hedges, trees, sheds, oil tanks, washing lines and anything else a person could meet on the way off. Overhead, it means branches, cables and the edge of a roof.

The side figure is the one that surprises people. Two metres on each side adds 4 m to the length and 4 m to the width, so the ground a trampoline needs is a good deal bigger than the trampoline.

    2. How to measure your garden

    1. Find the level part. Walk the garden and pick the patch that is flat. Leave out banks, beds and anything that falls away.
    2. Measure its length and width. A tape, or long paces at about a metre each, is close enough to start with.
    3. Mark what stands on each side. Wall, hedge, fence, shed, tree. Measure from those, since they are where the 2 m starts.
    4. Look up. Check for 7 m of open air over the spot.
    5. Take 4 m off each measurement. What remains is the largest trampoline that fits. Trampoline size plus clearance equals the space you need.

A worked example: a level patch 9 m by 7 m leaves 5 m by 3 m once the clearance comes off. That is room for a rectangle up to 500 x 300cm, or a round trampoline up to 3 m across, which on our list means the 270cm.

    3. Sizes by shape, with prices

BERG names its trampolines by their length in centimetres, so a 380 is 380cm, or 12.5ft. These are the shapes in our catalogue, the range of sizes in each, and the lowest current price.

    Oval

    3 sizes: 11 x 8ft to 17 x 11.5ft

BERG calls these Grand. For a patch that is longer than it is wide.

    Rectangular

    6 sizes: 9ft to 16 x 10ft

BERG calls these Ultim. Lies along a strip of level ground and asks less of the width.

    Square

    2 sizes: 6 x 6ft to 16 x 16ft

Also Ultim. One small FlatGround and the large Pro Bouncer.

For which type, shape and range to pick, read choosing a trampoline in Mayo. Every model is on the BERG trampolines page.

    4. The footprint each size needs

One row for each of the 16 sizes we list. The last column is the listed size plus 2 m on every side: the level, clear ground that meets BERG's guidance in full. It is our arithmetic, so check the product page for the exact frame dimensions before you mark out the lawn.

For oval models and the rectangular Favorit models our price list holds the length only. For those we give the length needed and leave the width to the shop page.

The table shows why shape matters on a narrow patch. A round 330cm needs 7.3 m across in both directions. The rectangular 330 x 220cm needs 7.3 x 6.2 m: the same length, and over a metre less across.

Above ground means on legs, always with a safety net. InGround is set into the lawn with a low raised edge. FlatGround is level with the grass. The two sunken types need groundwork by an independent installer, and the clearance is the same for all three.

    5. Level ground

BERG's manual says a trampoline stands on level ground. A patch that looks flat from the kitchen window can fall away by more than you expect, so check it on foot before you measure.

Grass is the usual surface. Ground anchors hold in soil and do nothing in a patio, concrete or gravel, which matters anywhere the wind gets at the garden. If your only flat area is hard standing, ring us before you order.

    6. One user at a time

It is tempting to size up so that brothers and sisters can jump together. BERG's guidance is one user at a time on any size, with an adult supervising, no jumping in rain or wind, and no children under six. So buy for the space and for the years of use you expect, and let the children take turns.

On user weight, BERG rates the Pro Bouncer for users up to 120kg. Ask us for BERG's figure on any other model if an older teenager or an adult will be using it.

    7. Sizing a trampoline for a Mayo garden

Mayo County Council's community plan describes Mayo as one of the most rural counties in Ireland, and many Mayo homes are detached houses on rural sites. Room is often the easy part. The two things that decide the size are the same as anywhere, level ground and shelter, and both can be in shorter supply than the site suggests.

    • Level. Around Clew Bay the land is a drumlin field, described in the council's landscape appraisal as sharply undulating, and a site there can have a great deal of grass and very little of it flat. Measure the level part of the garden, not the whole site.
    • Shelter. The prevailing wind is between south and west. BERG notes that a fence or hedge lowers a trampoline's exposure to gusts. If the sheltered spot behind the house or the hedge is smaller than the open field side, we would take the smaller trampoline in the sheltered spot.
    • Anchoring. Whatever the size, plan to anchor an above-ground trampoline on an open site. The Mayo wind and ground guide covers the storms, the soil and the two anchor kits we sell.
    • Getting it in. Delivery is to the kerbside on a pallet, and larger sizes come in long, heavy boxes that you move to the garden yourself. If the house is down a narrow lane or a long unpaved drive, say so when you order. Details are on the Mayo delivery page.

Want it checked? Send two or three photos and the measurements of the level part through the free garden consultation, or ring 091 423 369, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. We compare the space with BERG's manual and reply with a size, a shape and a delivered price.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What size trampoline will fit my garden?+

Measure the level, clear part of the garden and take 4 metres off the length and 4 metres off the width. That allows BERG's 2 metres at each side. What is left is the largest trampoline that fits, as long as there is also 7 metres clear overhead. The table on this page does the same sum the other way round for every size we sell.

How much room does a 14ft trampoline need?+

A 14ft round trampoline is 430cm across. With BERG's 2 metres at each side it needs a level, clear area about 8.3 m across. An 11ft round, 330cm, needs about 7.3 m across. These are our sums from BERG's clearance figure.

What is the smallest BERG trampoline you sell?+

The smallest sizes on our list are 200cm: a round trampoline 6.5ft across and a square FlatGround of 200 x 200cm. A 200cm trampoline needs about 6.0 m across of level, clear ground. Prices across the whole list start at €339.

    Can a trampoline go on a slope?+

BERG's manual says a trampoline goes on level ground. On a sloping garden, measure only the part that is level, or the part you are prepared to have levelled. We do not advise on how to level ground: that is for whoever does the work.

Does a sunken trampoline need less space than one on legs?+

No. We work from BERG's 2 metres at the sides and 7 metres overhead for every type. An InGround or FlatGround model takes less of the view, but the clear space around it is the same.

Should I buy a bigger trampoline so two children can jump together?+

BERG's guidance is one user at a time, whatever the size, with an adult supervising. Choose the size for the space you have and for how long you expect the children to use it.

Not sure which size your garden takes?

Send photos and the length and width of the level part. We will tell you which BERG sizes fit with the clearance BERG asks for, and what each costs delivered. Free, and no obligation.
